About Mbilima
Mbilima Washing Station, part of Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, was established in 2005 to help farmers struggling to reach the main Ruli station, ensuring better coffee quality. Located in Gakenke District, near Volcanoes National Park, the region’s rich volcanic soil, abundant sunshine, and tropical rainfall create ideal conditions for Bourbon arabica cultivation.
Fairtrade Certified since 2004, Dukunde Kawa has transformed farmers’ livelihoods by eliminating middlemen, doubling incomes, and promoting sustainability. 80% of its producers are women, and the co-op has provided livestock, health insurance, and interest-free loans. Since 2006, it has built two schools and improved housing, ensuring all members now have tiled roofs.
